How can I remove a password from a document if I forgot it in Microsoft Word?

To keep password protection in MS Word document is a very useful feature. It helps to keep your documents private or manage shared access with several authorized users. However, if you lose the password, you will be left with a document you can’t edit at all. If you forget the password of Microsoft Word document, there are a few methods you can try to remove it:

Using WordPad

Right-click on the document and select Open with > WordPad or Open with > Choose another app (options will display in various ways in different versions). If in your computer, it shows Choose another app then click on it. It will open the app list

Scroll down. The app named WordPad will appear

Select the app. It will ask you two options: Always or Just Open

Select any one from these to open the same file in the WordPad

Once the document opens in WordPad, select all the data by pressing Ctrl+A

Copy the data from WordPad. Open the New Word Document and paste there

Save the file. Its up to you that you are saving the file with a new name or with the same old file name. If you want to save the file with the same name then it will ask before save it

Choose the first option i.e. Replace existing file

Now, your file is ready to use.

The another way is that you directly save the file from WordPad to XML Document by click on Save As button

Using Google Docs:

Upload the password-protected document to Google Docs.

Google Docs is a free online app for text editing which provides the approximately same features as MS Word. You can use this method if you need to open the protected file. But if you do not have the Google account, you have to create it. When Google Docs open, click on Open file picker

Click on Upload option

Click on Browse button to open file from your computer or laptop.

The Open dialog box will appear.

Select the drive and the file. Then Click on Open

The file will open within seconds

Now, the file is opened in the Google Docs

Go to File>Download>Open document format (.odt). The file will save in your device

The file has been downloaded in your device

Open the file directly from here or from the Open location. When the file is opened in the Word Document, its appearance is not the usual opened file in the document.

In this file, there is a button on the top i.e. Enable Editing.

Click on that button to open file in a regular Word document

Now, the file is ready to use
